TilCrust™ Explained: The Natural Seasoning Behind Every Trilonium Pan

Dear reader,

If you have ever run your hand over a Trilonium pan and wondered what gives it that smooth, dark, ready-to-cook surface right out of the box — that is TilCrust™, our signature seasoning.

Where the Name Comes From

"Til" is the Hindi word for sesame — a seed with a long history in Indian kitchens, valued for the oil it yields. "Crust" refers to the protective layer our seasoning forms on the cookware. Together, TilCrust™ carries forward that age-old tradition of oil-based seasoning from Indian kitchens, now applied to the modern iron and steel cookware we make.

What TilCrust™ Actually Is

TilCrust™ is our proprietary blend of two or more natural cold-pressed vegetable oils — nothing synthetic, no chemical coatings. This blended oil is cured onto the surface of the cookware at a specific temperature for a specific length of time, forming a smooth layer between your food and the bare metal beneath.

Triple-Seasoned, By Design

We do not stop at a single pass. The curing process is repeated three times, building up the seasoning layer by layer — which is why every piece of Trilonium ferrous cookware comes triple-seasoned before it reaches you.

Not Just a Colour Change

A lot of "pre-seasoned" cookware available in the market is really just darkened — the surface goes from grey to a darker grey or black, with little genuine seasoning underneath. TilCrust™ is different: it is a proper, scientifically controlled curing process, not a cosmetic finish. That is why it performs the way real seasoning should, right from the first time you cook with it.

A Living Layer, Not a Permanent Coating

Unlike a synthetic non-stick coating, TilCrust™ is not a permanent, factory-bonded finish — it is a natural, oil-based seasoning. With regular cooking and a little oil, it builds up and becomes smoother over time. But like any genuine seasoning, it can wear thin or even get scraped off with harsh scrubbing, very high heat, or acidic food. This is normal, not a defect — it is simply how real seasoning behaves, and it can always be built back up.

Why It Matters

Because there is no synthetic non-stick layer to flake off, you are not cooking with anything you would not want in your food — only cured, natural oil. Cooking on iron brings a small benefit as well: your food picks up trace amounts of dietary iron along the way.

Built to Last

With proper care, the cookware itself — our FG200 grade solid cast iron and high-quality carbon steel — is made to last a lifetime, the kind of pan that gets passed down in a family rather than replaced, even as the seasoning on it is renewed from time to time.

With warm regards,
